Bilbao

The Guggenheim museum...
The best part of the city was along the river
Again, we try to imitate the door scene...but Natalie, you just do a better job than me!

Picos de Europa

This area of Northern Spain is not a well known area, but it should be. Really gorgeous. We took a cable car up to the top of the mountain, and had miles and miles of hiking up on top. Some of the area is very dry and moon-like looking, but the other side is verdant and lush. I just didn't realize that Spain has their own alps! We were lucky to have a warm, sunny day with only passing clouds.....a lot of our trip however was covered in a cloud, so we felt doubly blessed!

Brent and Sandy are going on a mission!

Sorry to notify all by e-mail, but so many have asked us to let them know about our mission call. We have been called to the Philippines San Pablo Mission and we report Sept. 26, 2011! Our call is to serve as member and leader support missionaries. We are excited to serve with President and Sister Peterson from our stake! Love to all. Brent and Sandy
(sent to me by yahoo mail!...isn't it exciting???)

San Sebastion Spain

At the tapas bar. Love the slabs of meat hanging from the ceiling.
Once we walked into town (instead of taking the funicular) and we passed this beautiful lighthouse.
The beach is wide and sandy and beautiful. Our hotel is perched on the top of the hillside.
The harbor...
Ornate cathedrals....and of course mandatory gelato
Caught in a rainstorm we took refuge in a tiffany lamp....well it looked like one, but it was just a fancy gazebo.
The funicular into town.

Making the most of our time off!

When the sun is out, so are all the people!
The first day we were in coats and scarfs....the next day shorts and sandals! Sounds more like Belgian weather.

We are having a great time, although the weather isn't perfect....yet. We have had a lot of rain, but by the afternoon, it's clear and warm. So that gives us time in the morning to sleep in and read and do yoga....Perfect! Then we stroll around San Sebastion and walk on the huge sandy beach and eat gelato and tapas and paella. There is a beautiful old town for the cathedrals and for window shopping. Our hotel is on top of one of the hills...we take a funicular into the town and our views are fantastic. Tonight is a jazz festival on the beach.
These aren't necessarily the best photos....just wanted to communicate with you and let you know we are fine and having fun!

Dear Daphne and Zane

Dear Daphne and Zane,
The animal lovers. Guess what? I was cleaning the drain in front of our garage and oh MY! a huge frog jumped out at me. He was about the size of my fist clenched up. You know what my first thought was??? Where is Daphne and Zane when I really need them!
I took courage and caught him with a broom and a dust pan....no way was I going to catch him with my bare hands. Bugs are one thing, but frogs are another thing all together for me.
Oh, and one more thing. We have slugs and snails in our garden. My friend Deb told me they really like beer. Yep. So I had to go to the Del Haize grocery store and buy beer! I was hoping that nobody would tap me on the shoulder while I was buying them and say, "Hi Sister Herway!" That would have been awful. So I poured the beer into a tray and set it in the garden. I'll let you know if I catch any. I hope the mole likes beer too....I sure would like to catch him!
Please write me back!
Love,
Grammie

Best Time of the Day

What is your favorite time of day? Tom loves dusk. We spent the day at the temple, so tonight we decided to bike to Tervuren. Ate dinner at the lakeside cafe. Took a new route. Had my camera with me this time. Biked home at dusk. It was a near perfect day!
