On a High

Just feeling really happy. Sooo nice to talk to Nicole. She is truly cut out for missionary work. Her cup of tea! And now our 6th grandchild is finally here! Welcome Tommy Herway! And everything went well for Mel. Whew! Steve is slowly returning to his normal self...thanks again Dan for getting him to sleep upright, it really did make a difference!
Marvelous, just marvelous. Now to find out what Natalie is going to have. For the record, Dad and Steve say boy, and Nicole and I say girl.

Why are they called Wisdom teeth??

Today Steve had his 4 impacted wisdom teeth pulled. He is now on high doses of pain killer and they must be working b/c he is downing lots of chocolate shakes and pudding and Dan-ups. So bear with me on the wisdom teeth pulling memories: Dan did it his freshman year of college, and returned to his dorm room after. I should be shot for not being there! Seth also did it in the US, but at least went to Suzanne's afterwards and had some motherly care, BUT his pain killer was placebo, so he suffered! Jake did it at the one day clinic, same place as Steve, same Doctor. Also all 4 impacted. Natalie only had 2 wisdom teeth to pull. Did it here, same place, same Dr. Then Nicole. She was in a rush, so had to do it in the Dentist office under local anesthesia, and had mono on top of it!
I did it after I had 4 kids. Didn't see the light of day for 3 days. When I emerged, Tom had things pretty much in control, but he said I looked like death warmed over.
So why are they called wisdom teeth? I'm thinking a new name, help me here Heidi b/c you are the master at this. Misery teeth, mess up my life for a week teeth, death teeth. Ewe teeth. Why wisdom???

Tattle tale

So Tom had to save me from myself on Sunday, and his payment is that I have to put the whole darn story on my blog!
I hate to carry the car keys with me into church, mostly because I don't have anywhere to put them and I'm afraid that I will lose them. Thus, I usually just leave the car unlocked and leave the keys in the side pocket of the door. Yesterday, I pulled into the parking space, took the keys out of the ignition, got out of the car, and when the door shut, I automatically turned the key to lock the car. BUT, Steve hadn't shut his door yet, and I went to his side of the car to ask him if he would keep the keys, but then changed my mind because I didn't want to bother him with the keys. So I dropped then into the door pocket and then shut his door.
OOPS>
The car was locked and the keys were inside. Hard to pull off, but I managed. Tom was at a conference. So when I knew he was back home, I had to call him and ask him to come and save me! And he did, and now I have payed him for his kind service by posting the whole story on the blog. Ugh!
Oh, and lest I don't tell the whole story, I also left my purse in his car overnight. Guess I just wasn't happy to let it get stolen in Rome, I was begging for it to happen in Brussels.
Pretty pitiful, I confess.
Now Tom, we are even. (He thought it was unfair that I told everyone about the attack of the Mighty Mouse! This evens things up.)

Chuckle

I was saying the blessing on the food tonight. This is what Steve heard, "...and please bless Dad that he will be safe and well and hungry...." He looked at me weird when the blessing was over of course. He was thinking, "does Mom want Dad to be hungry so he'll be really glad to be home or what???" But of course I said, "....and please bless Dad that he will be safe and well IN HUNGARY!" Because of course he is on business in that country! We both had a good laugh. Hope you do too.

humphf

Monday morning after a vacation. Hard anyway, right? But I got myself into gear, gathered up books, and DVDs for the library, and letters to mail and headed to the gym at NSA. Realized when I got there, that I forgot my ID card...haven't had to use it for a whole week, right?? I said to myself, "oh, hopefully I'll know one of the guards and they will let me in." But no, the guard said he didn't know me and I had to have an ID to get in. Nice kid. Probably just about 19 years old.
Then it hit me, I have been coming to this darn building for 19 years myself, before that guard was probably even born! and nobody knows me and nobody trusts me, and I can't get in without that darn little piece of paper. In other words, the past 19 years means nothing. I am as much a stranger there as anywhere in the world. I can't decide if that makes me sad, or does it just amaze me.
It reminds me that when our kids come to visit at church, they are the ones who have to introduce themselves b/c nobody knows them, even though they grew up in that ward. So I guess what I'm saying is that we live in a limbo situation. We are not home, we are not on vacation. We live in limbo!
I'm not complaining. It's been a great limbo. Just had to blow some steam.

Sardinia

Our trip to Sardinia was lovely in every way. Hard to put into words you know. A perfect marriage of earth and sea. It's breath taking.
What's cool, is that it wasn't really discovered until 1964, as far as tourists go anyway. They have strict building codes and so all the homes just blend into the earth and no high rises to make you want to puke. There is much that is completely undeveloped. The agriculture meets the forest, that meets the beach that meets the sea. No buildings in sight. We found a beach that we walked for over 4 hours and saw only 2 other human beings. I am NOT kidding! And there was a reason we even saw those 2 human beings. Here is the story. We were walking along that deserted beach when we came upon a paddle boat. Why not? We pushed it into the sea and had a good couple of hours tooling around. We decided to take it back, and that's when we saw those 2 other people. And they were yelling at us. Yep, they were the owners. Since we hadn't seen any form of life, how in the world did they know we had their paddle boat??? We took the yelling in stride, b/c we really were in the wrong. But no damage done and we parted.
Oh, and Steve saw his first real snake! It was basking in the sun on the patio of our hotel. Yes, this place is wild and very natural! We were pretty sure it was just a garden snake, but then we aren't experts, so we didn't hang around too long!
We found a tower and we climbed it. On top was a 360 degree sweeping, stunning, view. I have to put it at the top of all the views I have ever seen. WHAT??? Number ONE?? Yep. Better than Bellagio, Lake Como. Better than the alps. Mountains, water of all hues of blue/green, islands, harbor towns, boats, white sand beaches, greenery and wild flowers galore in absolutely every direction you could look! Just imagine! OHH, AHHH! And b/c it was early spring the entire island was covered in wild flowers. It smelled like a garden of Eden and looked like one too! Big whiffs of incredible smells. I would be talking to Dad and we would have to stop in mid sentence just to take a deeper breath! Now that's a nice change from the Belgian metro!
Granted, we were there too early to go into the water. That's not all bad in Europe. That means there wasn't any topless girls on the beach. In fact, that meant there was no one on the beach! We had the place to ourselves.
Oh, and Dad was dubbed, Eagle Eye Herway. He found a beach that left us breathless. And it was hidden! You had to find this hidden path, and then walk quite a way, and then TA DA, there it was, in all it's splendor. It made my jaw drop. I would have never found it on my own.
I loved spending a week with no TV, or phone, or responsibilities, and chillaxing with Dad and Steve. The Lord blessed us tremendously.

Just gaze on this

I'll write more later...this is the preview

I think, well I don't know what to think!

Today while Steve and I were buying some milk, the art center coordinator came up to me and said, "There is someone who wants to buy your painting that you have hanging in the center. How much would you sell it for?"
For starters, I couldn't even remember what painting I had in the art center! So Steve and I go to look at it again, and it's one that I did this past summer when Nicole and I had a painting spree! It's a Monet, but looks like a Van Gogh....
"So are you willing to sell it?"
Why not I say to myself, otherwise it just goes into the laundry room!
"Sure"
"Do you think $50 is a fair price?"
"Sure"
So does that mean I'm a professional artist now? Or does that just mean that some lady has no concept of art!!! Well, well. Somebody wants to buy my painting. I think for today I'll just feel really good about myself!
News flash! They finished Moorselstraat. This will only be news for Dan and Natalie because they saw first hand how much of a detour we were dealing with to get out of the neighborhood. It was ridiculous, and has been ridiculous since last September!!! In fact it was downright irritating. Today we drove and kept driving right along Moorselstraat without any weggommleggings! It was a moment of sheer disbelief. It is finished!! Luckily Steve was in the car with me so we could experience the event together. And what did they do that took them 8 months? Well, we have nice bike paths and a few speed bumps, and it's newly paved. Wahoo. That took 8 months? Belgium will forever win the prize for taking the most time on road repairs and not caring one whit what it does to traffic!
Lastly, in case anyone wants to get in touch with us, we will be in Sardinia all of next week. We leave bright and early tomorrow morning and will be back next Saturday. We are going to take the bus to the airport, and I'm surprised how much of a thrill that gives me! Simple pleasures! Oh, and where is Sardinia you may ask? It's an island in Italy, just north of Sicily. Supposed to be very natural and untouristic and stunning beaches, which will be too cold to go in, but that's ok!
So everyone have a good week, and we'll talk when we get back....

Ok, I'm inspired

I closed the book and said out loud, "Ok, I'm inspired". It was "No One Can Take Your Place" by Sheri Dew.
* In effect, this mortal course is the final examination for all of the life that we lived through in this infinite premortal period.
*It takes the elect to gather the elect. That is who we are. And no one can take our place in doing it. No one, absolutely no one, can do what we have been sent here to do.
*Neither the timing nor the placement of our advent into mortality is accidental or capricious. We are where we are supposed to be.
* The special spirits who have been reserved to live in this time of challenges and who overcome will one day be praised for their stamina by those who pulled handcarts. (Maxwell)
**No one but you can determine if you will be firm in the fire. No one but you can determine if, at all costs, you will in this sphere stand loyally by God and by Jesus and will not flinch.

Well, I plan to give it one heck of a go!
