Ruth is my friend who is Swiss and her home is in Bern. Today she invited the tennis group to her house for Fondu and Raclette. It was fabulous. She is a great cook anyway, and then add the fact that it is truly a Swiss meal, and it was delightful. The question came up, "What is a truly American meal?" There was myself and one other American and we couldn't come up with anything specific. I guess we just borrow from other countries. We tried to say that lasagna was a pretty common American meal. They wouldn't go for it b/c it is an Italian meal. Chicken? That's everybody. Hamburgers? I don't fix hamburgers and wouldn't consider it an American 'meal'.
What would you have answered?

That is a hard question that I've thought about before.
I would say hamburgers, hot dogs, apple pie, mac & cheese, steak, pizza... They might not be "ours" but they are very common.
Here in Texas we've got Tex Mex and BBQ... esp beef brisket.
I just reread my comment and it sounds like I'm claiming Texas ("we've got"). I can't believe I LIVE in TEXAS!
That is a tough question. I'm stumped. I wish I could eat some swiss fondue...that sounds divine!
Meat and potatoes? I typical Sunday meal at least in these Mormon parts is roast and potatoes???
Unfortunately lately this issue was braught up and the initial suggestion was Hamburgers (and there is a current commercial about a guy finally getting a real american meal of hamburger and fries), and then was decided on Hot Dogs are a truly american food. Sadly I had to agree, Americans are the fatty, cholesterol loving country full of obese people that love hamburgers and Hot Dogs. Cooked in home american Meal? BBQ I would have to say BBQ
Where else in the world do you get a good BBQ meal. That's waht we coook all the time, chicken, veggies, corn, fish....all on the grill.
